David Beers is the CEO of Choice Hotels EMEA, one of the largest global hospitality companies in the world, and one of the last major hospitality companies still sourcing eggs from hens trapped in cruel cages.
In 2020, Choice Hotels pledged to its customers that it would put an end to the horrific and widespread animal cruelty in its egg supply chains by 2025. As this deadline fast approaches, Choice Hotels' yearly cage-free progress reports continue to be misleading, exhibiting a lack of forward motion across all locations with no regard to consumer trust or animal welfare, and with no clear plan to actually reach the goal they committed to.
Cages are nothing short of a living nightmare for hens. Hens are confined to cages so unbearably small and overcrowded with birds, that they can barely move or stretch their wings. They suffer from fractured and broken bones, severe feather loss, and some, too exhausted or trapped to move, are trampled to death by their fellow cage mates. Surrounded by their own waste and rotting corpses, these hens are forced to endure a daily hell. This isn't life—it’s a slow, agonizing torture that can be prevented.
If David Beers and Choice Hotels truly cared about animal welfare and upholding their promises to the public, they should put their words into real action. No more stalling. It’s time they report more meaningful progress and disclose how they’ll reach their goal of being 100% cage-free globally. The world is watching and waiting for them to take their commitment seriously.
